Mack the Knife – Protein Crystal

mack-the-knife-xtal-1

A protein crystal sitting in a drop of liquid containing the conditions required for its growth. The crystal is a different colour compared to its surroundings since crystalline objects have bifringence properties and change colour as the polariser on the microscope is rotated. Crystals grow in many different and unpredictable forms.
